Hawaiian Airlines, Hawaii’s home airline since 1929, today introduced a new level of vacation travel, inspired by early Polynesian travel, with the unveiling of the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner interior and a new class of premium service – the Leihōkū Suites. Guests aboard Hawaiian’s 787 — which will enter service on select routes early next year — will be immersed in cabin design elements that evoke Hawai’i’s rich natural world through bold textures, island-inspired sunrise and sunset lighting, and winding ocean and wind patterns.

“The combination of our evocative cabin design and unparalleled service will make our 787 the most relaxing and enjoyable choice for travel to and from Hawaii,” said Avi Mannis, head of marketing and communications for Hawaiian Airlines. “We are proud to share our home with our guests, and the design and details of this product truly reflect what it means to be the flagship carrier of the Hawaiian Islands.”

Hawaiian’s 300-seat 787 features its latest premium product, Leihōkū (garland of stars): 34 suites that envelop guests in a calm, elegant space with fully flat seats, an 18-inch in-flight entertainment screen, personal power outlets, wireless charging and direct aisle access. The suites are in a 1-2-1 configuration with doors and can offer privacy or a shared experience, with combined double chairs allowing couples to fall asleep while gazing at a starlit ceiling.

In developing the Leihōkū Suite, Hawaiian became the first airline to partner with Adient Aerospace – a joint venture between the Boeing Company and Adient, a world leader in automotive seating.

“It was clear from the start that Hawaiian Airlines is very passionate about its culture and branding, making sure that this comes through in the design language and in the passenger experience,” said Tony Guy, CEO of Adient Aerospace. “It is so satisfying to bring this vision to life together and to see it realized in the finished product.”

In Hawaiian’s 787 Dreamliner Main Cabin, consisting of 266 Collins Aerospace Aspire seats with ergonomically contoured back and armrests, guests will enjoy a lightweight, modern design that maximizes seating space, offers greater shoulder and hip room, and a 12-inch backrest monitor with USB-A and USB-C charging ports.

Seventy-nine Extra Comfort seats offer more legroom and access to electrical outlets.

Every design element of Hawaiian’s 787 pays homage to Polynesian navigators who sailed the Pacific Ocean by observing the stars, sun, wind, waves and wildlife. The airline worked with design consultant Teague to realize Hawaiian’s vision of honoring Pacific navigation in a modern aircraft.

“Partnering with such an iconic brand in Hawaiian Airlines, we were able to create an experience that is true and authentic to what Hawai’i is,” said Loreto Julian, interior design and surface textile design manager at Teague. “During the trip, guests will be able to appreciate the culture of Hawaii and be surprised with discoverable moments.”

Smooth, high-tech sailing

The 787 offers improved cabin air filtration and the carbon fiber composite airframe allows travel at a lower cabin height, resulting in a more comfortable flight. Guests will also notice a quiet cabin thanks to the acoustically treated engine intakes, as well as oversized, dimmable windows, spacious overhead bins and washroom toilets and taps with contactless activation.

Wind and Waves: The wind and waves that have shaped the Hawaiian archipelago are expressed through curved shapes in the hall and cabin. Accents of deep aqua adorn the carpets and room dividers in the Leihōkū Suites.

Advanced, durable navigation

Hawaiian’s 787 will be the most fuel efficient widebody aircraft in its fleet thanks to its lightweight construction, innovative aerodynamics and modern General Electric GEnx engines. The 787 is significantly more fuel efficient than similar sized aircraft of the previous generation.

Stars and Sky: Hawaiian’s 787 has a simulated cabin sky, with soft daylight, soothing sunrises and sunsets, or dramatic starry skies at night. Guests at Leihōkū Suites gaze up at a luminous star-compass ceiling reminiscent of the constellations that guided Polynesian travelers at night.

A Hawaiian Journey

Every detail of the interior pays homage to Hawai’i’s pristine environment, from wall paneling featuring native wood grains to the restroom floor inspired by glistening black volcanic sand. ‘Ōlelo Hawai’i (Hawaiian language) is also integrated into seat row numbers and other signs to guide guests through the cabin as they begin their journey. Laminates and fabrics echo the shapes of native plants throughout the cabin.

Hawaiian is expected to receive the first of 12 Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners in November, with remaining deliveries scheduled through 2027. For more information, visit www.HawaiianAirlines.com/B787
