WHAT: World Environment Day

WHERE: Ivory Coast

WHEN: June 3-5, 2023

An estimated 19-23 million tons of plastic waste is dumped into lakes, rivers and seas every year. Discarded single-use plastic harms human health, the economy, the environment and threatens sustainable development.

Under the theme of #BeatPlasticPollution, World Environment Day 2023 offers an opportunity to raise awareness of the call for governments, cities and businesses to invest in and implement solutions to end plastic pollution.

World Environment Day, led by the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) and celebrated annually on June 5 since 1973, has become one of the largest global platforms for environmental outreach, with millions of people around the world committed to protecting the planet. This year it is organized by Ivory Coast, in collaboration with the Netherlands.

The African Development Bank, based in Abidjan, has long supported Côte d’Ivoire in celebrating World Environment Day. This has a special resonance this year, on the 50th anniversary of the event, with Ivory Coast as global host.

The Bank is supporting various activities, such as beach clean-up in Grand Bassam on Saturday 3rd June and a panel discussion and exhibition of plastic pollution solutions in Abidjan on Monday 5th June.

In terms of the circular economy, the bank has promoted its Africa Circular Economy Facility (ACEF) and the African Circular Economy Alliance (ACEA).
